Lionel model trains were during their height of popularity considered toy trains, and today they still are. However, the Lionel model train is an exquisitely detailed and crafted train, which to this day, some 50 and 60 years later, is coveted by collectors and adored, by children and adults alike.

Though the original Lionel Company sold its toy train line and the trademark the Lionel name lives on in such classics as the Harry Potter Hogwart’s replica and the Polar Express. These trains capture the imagination of children and provide hours of delight. On the other hand, collectors prize Lionel trains built in the early days and modeled after trains of the day.

One of Lionel’s toy trains was one of the first two electric toys to enter the Toys Hall of Fame. The quality of the Lionel toy trains has risen and fallen according to the ownership of the company. It passed originally from Joshua Cowen to General Mills in 1969, with mediocre success. In 1986, a Lionel model train enthusiast named Richard Kaughn took over, and quality improved drastically and the name changed to Lionel Trains.

This lasted about 9 years and the company was sold to a consortium called Wellsprings Associates LLC. Fortunately, for the Lionel model trains one of the investors was musician and Lionel enthusiast, Neil Young. The change was good because Lionel has always seemed to fare better under the guidance of model train hobbyists and enthusiasts.

True classic Lionel model trains are worth a significant amount of money these days to collectors and each piece is stamped with four numbers to identify them. There are also differences in couplings, which can help date these model trains. Pre- WWII Lionel trains had little hooks for the couplings. Post war models used either a peg coupler or a scout series coupler.

Electric couplers made an appearance post WWII as well. The first efforts in electric couplers were somewhat glitched as the shoe could be snagged at switch points. Later refinements helped solve this problem.

It is worth pointing out that the Lionel name made such an impact on the model train industry that their standard 0 scale was adopted as replica standard. This was not a shabby accomplishment for a maker of mere ‘toys’. What made this toy a standard for model trains? It was the attention to detail, the quality and painstaking artisanship in making replicas for children. Doubtless, many baby boomers’ love of the model railroad trains came from Christmas where a toy train set was necessary for any child. In turn, they nurtured the love of these beautiful replicas in yet another generation.

Though Lionel Toy Trains is now called Lionel LLC, to model enthusiasts the world over the name Lionel Toy Trains will always be what they are called. They are still producing lovingly replicated models of originals or even of flights of fantasy and wonder such as the Hogwart’s express from the Harry Potter movies and books and these gorgeous models still spark the imagination of young and old alike.

When one is getting ready to create a model railroad, it is important to have some model railroad track plans laid out ahead of time. There are a number of different ways you might prepare your model railroad track and it will all depend on exactly how detailed you want to get with your layout.

First of all you need to determine whether or not you want a three dimensional landscape. Naturally the landscape will always be three dimensional, but when you involve sloping landscapes and mountains it becomes a bit more complicated. You may need your track to run up the side of a hill, or you might need it to run through a tunnel. If you try to do this all on a whim, you might find that your layout does not work very well.
Before you begin building it would be a good idea to search online for other model railroad track plans. You might not follow them exactly, but looking at them carefully can give you a good idea of what you will be undertaking. If you have some understanding, then at the very least you can hope to create an effective model.

The basis of all model railroad track plans is the benchwork. The benchwork will determine how large your scenery will be, and even whether or not it is mobile. If you are planning to take your benchwork to train shows or even move it about the house, it would be a good idea to make sure everything comes apart in some way. Most people will allow the benchwork to be separated at some point which is especially good for the DCC control system if you happen to have one.
The bottom of the benchwork is often home to a series of wires which control the model train’s movements. Not everyone will use DCC control, but there are many electric train models that simply use a basic on and off switch. Some people however will choose to utilize a steam powered engine, and in the past this was actually powered by oil. These days you would use pellets power the train, and you can learn more about this at your local hobby shop.

Your benchwork needs to be built around the power supply you plan to use for your train. You might choose to utilize steam, you might choose electricity, but no matter what, you need to make sure your setup will work properly. For this reason it would be prudent to go over your model railroad track plans several times before you implement anything, and if possible talk to an expert.

You would be surprised at how willing experts will be to go over your model railroad track plans with you, and make sure you are on the right track, so to say. So without further delay, it’s time for you to get out there and see what you can build. You might just be surprised at yourself.

If you are new to the fascinating world of replica trains the terms model train scale and gauge may be confusing, at times they almost seem interchangeable. What follows though, is a simplified explanation of replica trains and their scales and gauges (referring to track size) to help unravel this confusing terminology.

Model trains can lead a child to explore the outermost realms of fantasy or experience the lumbering behemoths of the past, or they can provide a creative outlet for the adult. Part of the allure of these beautiful replicas is that these monster machines are miniaturized to sizes that can fit into a playroom, hobby room or garden area. To that end, certain standards called scales are used to recreate the locomotives as realistically as possible but with a much smaller size. Gauges for replicas refer to the track and the distances separating the load bearing rails. On models, these of course are much smaller and correlate to the scale of the real train. It is impossible to detail every single model train scale because in the beginning each manufacturer and modeler followed their own ideas, only in the last 100 or so years have model scales been more standardized in part due to the efforts of a dedicated few enthusiasts and a major toy train manufacturer. However, what follows are some of the most popular model train scale sizes in use.

HO Scale
This scale is the most popular scale right now in the English-speaking world including the UK. The exact details of the HO scale are that .14” equates to 1 foot of the real train. This shrinks the replica to a size that will allow for detailing of the train itself and yet fit within a room easily. This appeals to both the detail oriented artisan and modeler, as well as the hobbyist who is limited in space. However there is still a lot of disparity in sizing between manufacturers in Europe and the scales may not be precisely .14” to 1 ft even when labeled HO.

N Scale
The N Scale model trains are one of the more popular very small-scale model sizes. The N scale miniaturizes the trains at a scale of 1:148, which means that 148 inches of the train are scaled down to 1” on the model. These tiny replicas are great for modelers who want to create complex railway layouts and scenes but do not have the space to dedicate. On the other hand, the tradeoff is that these tiny trains will display less detail than larger models due to their reduced sizes and they are more costly than the HO models though less expensive than the G scale (often used for outdoor gardens).

G Scale
In popular terminology the G scale model is also known as the garden scale model (though it is not the official term) and these are usually made for outdoor displays. They allow for fine details in the scenery and the model trains but are generally too large for indoor displays. The most popular maker of this scale of replica trains is LGB known as the Lehmann Gross Bahn. The exact scale varies from European to North American manufacturers. Generally, in Europe the G scale is 1:22.5 while in North America it is 1:20.3. Though the difference might seem small, they can become magnified when working with a garden sized layout and consistency should apply throughout the layout.

The 0 Scale
The 0 Scale is most frequently considered a toy train scale and was popularized by the toymaker Lionel. Some modelers however use a 0-scale train size and run it on a replica track.

Overall, model train scale is a core and fascinating aspect of model railway trains as a hobby. Learning the basics helps the beginner in this area decide what type of model railroad train to focus on setting up.

Model steam trains are not just a hobby for serious model railway enthusiasts. Rather, they are works of beauty to the hobbyist. A model steam train actually puts out real steam as it runs around the tracks. People usually put the steam locomotives into groups on the basis of their wheel configuration as well as the actual railroad name. In the larger garden model trains, the live steam produced is part of the realistic feature of the entire railroad setup. As you can imagine, though, live steam needs more space (and costs more) compared with the smaller scale electrically-driven relatives for indoor hobbyists.

It could have taken years to handcraft each part and make each piece in the scenery. On the other hand, for the beginning or intermediate modeler, model trains can be a source of pride, and a glimpse of these majestic thundering behemoths from the past, and will not consume years of their time. The tried and true advice is to start small and work up to the more elegant features of model trains. This applies when when you to to choose your first model. Companies like Lionel make these types of locomotives.

Assess not only the looks of the model trains but the required tools. If a model will require any type of metalworking, it is not usually good for the raw beginner (unless they have experience and all the tools at hand). Instead, choose one with premade parts. The most true to life replicas are made from brass, iron, or sometimes wood, and soldered or even in some cases bolted.

The level of experience with models can help determine which of these tiny steam replicas are for the individual. A modeler who has assembled many small cars or even replica airplanes will find making their own replica trains a much easier task than a hobbyist who is choosing their very first model ever.

Do not underestimate the size of the project. When most people visualize a steam replica, they also include in the vision, delightfully detailed scenery, and tracks along with realistic sounds. This is all possible, but for the very first project, it is usually wise to stick with building just a simple train then move gradually upward to complex assemblies. In most cases this is how even virtuoso steam replica modelers began, they took small steps working their way up to their masterpiece model trains.

If you are also making your own model scenery then you will require some simple woodworking tools if you are inclined to make your own houses or trestle bridges. Materials for the scenery can vary from balsa and cotton, tissue, and talcum powder to premade tiny trees. It all depends on the amount of time and effort you can spare to this entrancing hobby. The tiny touches you can add can create sparkling streams, banks of snow, grassy meadows or rock strewn mountaintops and impart depth and realism to your model steam trains environment.

Model steam trains is just a subset of the overall model railway train hobby that can develop from childhood onward, or can be an interest picked up later in life. However, you can get the most from your first model by choosing one that fits the skill level, your budget, and your ability to access tools, and working your way upward from there.

Bachmann model trains are a leading brand of quality model railway trains. It does not matter if you are thinking of collectable toy trains, or new replicas, the name Bachmann model trains will probably be at the top of the list. This company has an amazing record of accomplishment of longevity.

They went from a being a producer of vanity products for the well-bred woman’s dressing table, to a supplier of not so well made, but very engaging toy trains for children. Eventually Bachmann branched out into an excellent selection of state of the art replicas.

Interestingly enough, collectors of the pre-war children’s toy trains by Bachmann are less interested in realism as the era and perhaps in some cases, nostalgia of the less than realistic early Bachman toy trains. Those early model toy trains ran on fuel rather than batteries or electricity. In some cases collectors remember them as their first childhood train set and hence, the realism and detail the collector normally requires takes a back seat to a genuine piece of history and possibly their own childhood.

However, despite the initial lack of quality in their toy trains, the Bachman name has flourished, and branched outward into making model trains for the serious hobbyist, since the company’s beginnings in 1869, while many of their competitors have long since been forgotten.

Bachmann became a serious name in the train hobbyist world when they began producing the Bachmann N scale trains. They focused on realism and detail and began to improve the models they produced. While their success with the N scale was great, they expanded to include the HO market and this also flourished at the time, and still does today.

While many model trains are still equipped with old-fashioned electrical controls, the HO scale Bachmann model trains come equipped with DCC (digital command control) straight from the box, including the miniature receiver required in the engine to stop and start the train. The N scale models are DCC capable but require the controller. The Bachmann models are known for their durability and quality with today’s hobbyist and a Bachmann model train purchased new can run from 100 dollars to 300 dollars. While collectors of era Bachmann trains find they are difficult to locate and equally expensive.

Does this discourage the true hobbyist or collector? Not at all, they simply limit new purchases to what the budget can afford and search garage sales, eBay and negotiate with other collectors to acquire these coveted pieces.
The Bachman Company has undergone many changes in ownership and far from deteriorating, the company seems to flourish with the changes. Today the Bachmann model trains catalogue offers over 2300 different selections for the model collector.

These range from the beginners type train to those Bachmann model train sets, which are suitable only for the very serious modeler and whose prices make them the luxury class for replica locomotives. While most hobbyists are not up for the top of the line models, the few who can enjoy these extra details are privileged to own what are sure to be tomorrow’s collectable model trains, today.

The term G scale is just one of the bigger model railway train scales which collectors and enthusiasts use when referring to this size of model. In comparison to the other sorts of model trains, its size is much larger. The truth is that it is the biggest out of the most common scales that model train hobbyists work with. Compared to real trains, G scale model trains are 22x smaller, with a ratio of 1:22. That means that real trains are 21 times larger than model G scale trains. Different model trains will have lower ratios.

Considered to be one of the larger scales trains, the O scale is only 1:48 to the actual size, approximately half the size of the G scale model trains. The G scale model train is about 26.7 inches long and approximately 6 inches high, compared to the O scale model trains which are approximately 16 inches long and 3.6 inches high. Ernst Paul Lehmann Patentwerk, a German company also known as Lehmann Gross Bahn (LGB) or “Lehmann Big Train” in English, is responsible for the development of the G scale model trains. The USA portion of this company founded in 1881 is called LGB of America.

G scale model trains are large. They are frequently called “Garden Railroading” which is the derivation of the term “G Scale.” In addition, the letter “G” stands for the German word groß which means big. This coincides with its German history. Similar to other big-scale trains, G scale model works on Number 1 gauge track. The number 1 gauge for the track spaces the rails out 45 mm apart.

They are so durable that even placing them outdoors or in a garden would be appropriate. Brass is normally the composition of G scale tracks. The owners really do not have much maintenance required of them. Big train lovers only need to wipe down their track with a clean cloth, and then the track is ready to run once again. Depending on how the model train is made, the G scale trains can be used indoors.

Bachmann and Aristocraft are the finest manufacturers in the U.S. of G scale.

One reason people love G scale model trains so much is that they are so durable. Parents don’t have to worry when kids play with trains, as they are durable enough to last for many, many years. Parents and children can bond together over G scale model trains. Parents can rest assured that their children will be able to handle these trains, although very young children may not be ready to gently handle smaller train scales like the N scale, which are approximately 5 inches long and an inch high.

Since model trains have been around for a long time, train manufacturers have made trains in different sizes to fit any need. The G scale model trains are a part of this.

You can find many excellent HO scale model train sets and individual supplies. One model railway train fan might choose to put up a model train that can go through their outside garden. One train enthusiast might have lots of space for a big set of tracks. Another enthusiast might have a small space but have the desire to have a couple of different tracks. There are many sizes of trains made by the makers of the model trains, for the fulfillment of many needs that are different.

O is the most popular size of large scale trains. 1/48th is the scale of O. This means that its size is one 48th of a standard sized train. One and one fourth inches is O’s gauge. The larger sized trains are often incorporated into people’s landscaping. However, this does not meet the needs of everyone involved in the world of trains.

The larger O scale is double the size of the HO gauge. The meaning of HO is “Half of O. The scale of HO is one eighty-seventh. The regular size track gauge of 16.5 mm can be found in HO trains. A size that is popular to employ in layouts is the HO scale. With a reasonable amount of space, you can have a well-designed track plan and some very creative scenery. At the same time, they are big enough to have lots of great detail in the better models. They are also big enough for kids to use without fear of small parts or tiny pieces being broken. The HO scale railroad line is the most popular with hobbyists in comparison to other scales, due to the fact that it strikes a balance between the detail of larger scales and the lower space requirements of smaller scales.

During the 1930s was when the first HO scale model trains appeared in the United Kingdom. These were made to be another option from the OO scale. However the OO scale was already established in the UK and as a result the HO scale had a difficult time being commercially successful. During the 1950s, US train enthusiasts really wanted realistic train sets. This was lucky for the HO scale model trains, because it allowed them to become more and more popular throughout the 60s and into the present day. HO scale has been rated by over two thirds of train lovers as their favorite train scale.

Because HO scale is one of the most popular, there are many different locomotives, sets, and accessories available made by different manufacturers. A large range of HO scale train sets are available to anyone who has an interest in trains. They feature ready-to-run trains and modular track, craftsman grade kits, supplies for building models from scratch, and even extremely detailed, limited-edition, brass locomotive models. In order to finish their layouts, hobbyists will check with a number of sources, including local hobby shops, global suppliers and foreign manufacturers.

HO trains are just the thing for you if you have visions of creating vast landscapes, rolling hills and miniature villages filled with busy little townspeople. Stun your loved ones by showing off your wonderful locomotive running down the track, maneuvering through the valleys and a tunnel. All of your wishes can come true with the HO scale model trains.

O model railroad scale is a favorite for serious model railway trains enthusiasts, who take pleasure in learning the history of the line, the towns and industries served and how it all looked in more detailed aspect, then reproducing scenes in a vigilantly planned layout to permit viewers to experience the feel of the ancient time and place. O scale model railroads are the second largest in the model train scales, behind g scale. Lionel makes many of the better o scale trains.

It can take years or even decades to plan and put up a layout and put all the scenery details in place, and the cost can add up to many hundreds and thousands of dollars. To entirely enjoy model railroading to the scope your budget will allow, identify what you want before you buy and look for a quality and worthy cost!

There are four major components that must be carefully considered when scheming model railway trains layout. They are the scenic effect desired, the space available, quantity of trains running, and ability to access the layout for repairs or maintenance.

The first important thing you should take into consideration when you’re creating your o model railroad train layout is it’s very simple to come up with impressive schemes and extensive and detailed scenery only to find that the path you ran amid your town and the mountain side can’t be accessed without you physically climbing up onto the designed layout and cautiously stepping between features to get to it. You will ultimately crush either a train car or a fragile piece of scenery in your model railway trains layout.

An oval or rectangular model railway trains track plan allows you the ability to construct some very nice features in the center, like a whole village and depending whether or not your layout is in opposition to a wall may provide you with sufficient access to your track or if it is against a wall, poses a difficulty getting to the portion of the rails that are impracticable. You may need to construct a section of the layout that can be flipped open for admittance from below, or as is finished often build a false mountain/tunnel scene where you can in fact come up “inside” the mountain and reach out into the layout.

Make sure you consider probable bridges and water features in the early stages even if you do not plan on constructing them the first time through. Be attentive to your turn radius if you plan to do any inside loops. And leave adequate room for your train yard. Many model railroaders like to use up hours working on their yards once the primary layout is done.

Allow ample of room for service rails and maintenance buildings. If you’re looking to imitate a real run on a definite railroad line then the “out and back” may work much better for you. The main concern with this type of layout is that you have huge enough areas at both ends for your turnarounds. The splendor of the “out and back” is that your scenery can be produced from one end to the other which permits you to place an array of absolutely different landscapes all into one layout.

The downside here is the vigor you have to work with. If you’re restricted to a layout that’s only two feet deep in the center you don’t have lots of room for roads or buildings. If that’s the case, then plan alternatively probably on a rural scene and specify the heck out of it. Use murals at the back your track to add depth to a thin layout.

The last thing that you need to consider in terms of model railway trains is the number of trains you plan on operating. About everyone who thinks they are going to be pleased running only one line and builds o model railroad train layout consequently is typically wrong. Imagine when you’re designing your o model railroad track layout. Believe you will be totaling at least one more line and leave room for extra railbeds, even if you don’t have the funds for it to put the line in correct away. This will save you innumerable hours of rework soon.

Model railroaders are frequently victims of their own lack of preparation. If you truly want to learn from other’s mistakes regarding model railway trains, it is best that you check out with an expert or seek an advice from experienced individuals. This might help you save thousands of dollars and numerous hours by avoiding the mistakes that others have already done.

Model railroad supplies can include an enormous range of items, from train parts to scenery to track to building and everything needed to create the miniaturized lifelike effects. Have you ever seen a model railway train at your neighbor’s house, at a show or hobby shop? After the triumph factor sunk in, I’ll definitely bet the next thing you were thinking is how possible it would be to have your own model railway trains and get the maximum benefit while operating it effectively.

It’s thrilling to think about building your own kingdom right in your own home – an artistic, functioning, operating masterpiece that you produced. You can ask the help of your friends, family, experts or you can generate the whole thing on your own and then try to invite them in for an in service session. You could go there by yourself after a long day of stressful work and take time to relax.

As we all know model railroading is the one of the most versatile hobby in the human race. It includes multiple disciplines including civil and mechanical engineering, painting, airbrushing, electrical wiring and circuitry, sound and lighting, digital command control, history, carpentry, different kinds of artistry, using various types of material to build structures, terrain and great scenery. The model railroader basically becomes a jack of all trades as he functions in a “labor of love” to generate a perfect dream.

Beginning any new hobby needs to bring a good sense of anticipation and model railroading is of no exempt. Many individuals become very excited by the possibility of having their own train set-up and operate it effectively. This thrill often leads to a sense of being besieged and occasionally sticker shock, after you have visit a hobby store and searching at the huge display of model railroad supplies offered and the wide array of prices.

In fact, it doesn’t have to be too overwhelming and it doesn’t take a great fortune to start with model railway trains. The easiest layouts would probably consist of a small oval tract and a locomotive with a few vehicles. It can be created on the floor, an ordinary table, or even an old wooden door. Most often, when you talk to experienced hobbyists, they would prefer to emphasize the necessity for a strong custom bench and a lot of room to build your lay-out, but don’t be discouraged from starting on your own.

You can later become more expert and good hobbyist when you gain more experience while trying to get more interest in railroading. You may encounter difficulty most especially if you are still a beginner because of unfamiliarity of the areas you are most interested. Do you like the different locomotives and rolling stock that encompass your trains, or do you desire building the scenery and producing the miniatures to look more realistic? Maybe you wish wiring the electrical control parts of the track or manipulating the software to function to your preference. One of the best things regarding model railroading is the extensive range of skills that you can discover and put to use. There is an impressive experience for roughly everyone to enjoy.

The other good thing about this hobby is that you can carry out as much or as little of the model railway trains yourself as you like. Several of the well-known model railroad supplies are kits for just about every facet from trains to scenery to tables, to electrical wiring and of course the software. These array from simple all wide-ranging starter kits to kits for individual parts planned for the more advanced modeler. You can purchase train and scenery kits individually or kits that contain both. The kits themselves can be either totally finished or organized to set up and run, or do it yourself kits that need more multifaceted construction, painting and assembly. Again, it is simple to begin with a simpler kit and advance to a bit more complex as your needs dictate, and funds allow. These kits also differ in price and intricacy depending on the scale or gauge with which you choose to work.

Any of the above mentioned model railroad supplies can be bought at your local hobby store. Hobby shops are typically very supportive because they want you to continue coming back. They can offer a hands-on experience and the likelihood to talk to others who discern what it is like when you are just beginning. They can frequently help you keep away from frequent beginner’s mistakes that they have already gone through. These items can also be initiated at local model railroad conventions and shows.

As we can see, there are lots of model railroad supplies sources for beginners on any budget. One of the vast things about this hobby is that you can get drawn in as profoundly, or as modest as you like. You can start with a simple kit and move forward in whatever course your curiosity takes you. Some hobbyists never make their own landscape, preferring to get pleasure from merely running their trains, while others get occupied in every aspect down to making their own logs, coal and even plants! So what are you waiting there, start now. You’re going to love this for sure.

N scale model trains are one of multiple scales in the model railroading world. In the beginning when you enter the fascinating model train world, finding out about scales and gauges when you listen to model train lover’s casual conversations is kind of overwhelming. You may consider model train building along with scenery is way out of your ballpark. However, the more you love model trains, the more you will understand of the terminology and all of the other elements that make up this fascinating pastime.

It is important to think about size before you start setting up your dream landscape and train model. Model train and train tracks are created by a lot of different individuals and they have multiple uses. Fortunately, with so many options, you can select the one that is perfect for you.

To guarantee that any brand of train can be used with any brand of tracks, train manufacturers design trains and tracks based on a scale and a gauge. When the scale of the train is mentioned by model train hobbyists, it means they are explaining the size. Scale is precisely this, a replica that is a smaller scale of an original size train. Ratio, along with the varying letters that are assigned to the scales, are a reflection of natural ratio differences.

Compared to other scale models, an N scale train is not as big. As a matter of fact, this is the tiniest of the four most well known scales. The measurement is 1:160. This means that a scale N train is one one sixtieth the size of an actual train. The N scale is somewhat more than half the measurement of HO. The scale is 1/87 for HO. This scale is a favorite for people who have limited space for their layouts, or people who love widespread scenery. Even though N scale trains need less space for a good model layout, they still have quite a bit more detail than some of the other small sized trains. Smaller rail cars, with their supplies, lend to the size of a layout that can be easily taken care of and added on to further on in the future. An additional benefit of using N scale trains is if the rail car and tracks are tinier, then the scenery around them will seem to be bigger and lovelier.

We have only had N scale trains since the 1960s, however, HO scale, O scale, and standard scale have been part of this hobby for a hundred years. The term N scale represents nine millimeter since there is a measurement of 9mm between the rails. The size of the track on which the model train works is called the gauge. It gauges the distance between the train tracks and the rails. The code otherwise means the rail’s height.

There are a lot of aspects involved in building model trains and the scenery that goes with them. N scale model trains are one element of this fascinating hobby. It depends on the train building to use whichever train size works for them. Regardless of the size of the train, they are all equally fun. N scale model trains can be great especially in a smaller space where another scale model train might seem too large for the room in which it is running.
