Building Model Railway Trains and Scenery

An enjoyable part of model railway trains is the ability to build the surrounding scenery. When you are tired of a train set encircling the Christmas tree and assembling and disassembling it each Christmas, you may want to make something more permanent on your own. You can be a true model railroader.

Your railroad’s foundation is the benchwork. Train hobbyists have a choice of purchasing pre-made benchwork or constructing one on their own. There are a few advantages to purchasing a benchwork kit. Benchwork kits are already cut out and have drill holes. Also they are stronger than a plywood piece and two sawhorses. Plus, if you have a kit, you can disassemble it and relocate it to another location in the house or take it to shows.

Certainly, creating a benchwork on your own is harder and it requires extra time, however, you have the chance to design your perfect concept for your trains. First of all, you must make your layout’s design. You must decide how big you desire your benchwork to be. Think about  whether you will be adding something else in the future. How much space does your home have for a train layout? What is the shape that you have in mind for the top of your benchwork? The shapes could be a square, rectangle, oval, or a circle. Usually 28 inches is the height of the table’s legs, however this can be changed according to your preferred design. With benchworking, it is very important to be sure you have strong benchwork and can handle a specific amount of weight. A 3/8 inch or 1/2 inch piece of plywood makes a nice platform. If you want a portable benchwork, you can divide the plywood into a few pieces before you put your benchwork together.

Remember perspective when you are assembling the model railroad scenery. The purpose is to make your layout appear bigger than it really is. You can attempt to use various amounts of scenery to figure this out. Putting bigger trees in the front and smaller trees in the back or putting them on the mountain tops will support this illusion also. Your scenery must also compliment your landscape’s theme that you choose. For example, if you have a logging train connected to your line, it should be traveling in the middle of a rural mountain location with many trees. Also you can put a sawmill or a lumberyard near this.

Additional decorations you can put on your landscape are tunnels, meadows of grass, fields, rocks, roads, as well as bridges. Also, you can have cities or villages with houses and buildings included. Intricate detail should be added to your scenery. Special details consist of signage, phone poles, fences, ground covers, shrubs, flowers, people, as well as animals. A very attractive touch is to have water such as ponds, rivers, streams or actually waterfalls.

At the end of the day, isn’t this why we like model trains — so we can flaunt our creative talent when we make beautiful landscapes that look real? Well, go to work and surprise your friends with your special talent.
